Behaviour is the most important
element of safety. The behaviour of an individual is based on the personality,
attitudes, beliefs and values that he or she has been exposed to. If a person
has been treated badly in the past, then he or she may have certain feelings
towards others that could affect his or her behaviour in a negative way. This
can lead to accidents and injuries.
Behaviour
Based Safety Implementation is an approach to safety that considers the
behaviour of people in work environments. It focuses on how people perform
tasks, rather than focusing on the tools or equipment used to perform those
tasks. This approach has been used for many years in industries such as
construction, manufacturing and aviation, but it has recently been taken up by
other sectors as well.
There are many factors that can
influence behaviour-based safety. These include:
·
People-related factors: These include
personality traits such as shyness, introversion or extroversion. They also
include specific skills such as being able to read maps clearly or driving
safely on the road.
·
Environment-related factors: these include
weather conditions such as icy roads or foggy nights; types of buildings like
old buildings which may not be well maintained; types of vehicles like
motorcycles which may be difficult for older drivers to operate safely; types
of machinery such as heavy machinery which may cause injury if used
incorrectly; types of equipment like heavy machinery which could cause injury
if used incorrectly; and so on.
·
The factors that influence corporate culture.
This includes: organizational structure, leadership style, and communication
patterns.
·
The factors that influence organizational
structure. These include: organizational goal(s), strategies for achieving
those goals and how they are implemented (e.g., by training).
·
The factors that influence leadership style.
These include: the leader's experience level; their willingness to delegate
authority; their skill at motivating others; their ability to encourage
creativity in others; their ability to motivate themselves; and their ability
to deal with difficult situations or crisis in an effective manner.
